One table, nine tools, every cell read from the vendor rather than from another comparison. This page deliberately carries specifications rather than verdicts — if you want tools scored and ranked, the scored roundup is here. What follows is the reference sheet.

The pattern in this table is the clearest one on the page: manual replay and automation almost never coexist. Forex Tester is the only tool here that does both properly, which is a large part of what its price buys. Everything free does one or the other — MT5 automates and cannot replay manually; the browser tools replay manually and cannot automate.
Four rows decide almost every choice. Work down them in order and the field narrows fast.
Whatever survives those four filters is your shortlist, and it is usually one or two tools rather than nine.
Every figure above was read from the vendor's own page on 17 August 2026. That matters more in this category than it should, because checking turned up errors in every third-party comparison consulted: Soft4FX widely listed at "$97, MT4 only" when it is $109 plus tax covering MT4 and MT5; Forex Tester quoted as a single price when software and data are separate purchases; TradingView's free plan described as including bar replay when it offers no intraday replay at all; and FX Replay's free tier presented as a usable trial rather than 2 sessions with one week of retention.
Cells marked "not stated" are exactly that — the vendor does not publish the figure, and no number has been invented to fill the gap. Pricing moves; where this page and a vendor disagree, the vendor is right and this page is stale.
Forex Tester at 25 years with its Super Data tier, followed by BacktestFX at 9+ years of tick data which is free with an account and ads. FXAbsolute offers about five years of one-minute data across 15 instruments free with no account. TradingView depth varies by tier, from roughly six months of M1 on Essential to all stored data on Premium.
The MT5 Strategy Tester when using real broker tick data, BacktestFX with real market spreads, Forex Tester on its Super Data tier with floating spread, and Soft4FX using broker data. FXAbsolute and TradingView replay work from mid-price data without spread modelling, which matters for strategies targeting under about ten pips.
Forex Tester is the only one in this comparison that does both properly, which is a significant part of what its price buys. Free tools specialise: the MT5 Strategy Tester automates but cannot do manual bar-by-bar trading, while browser tools such as FXAbsolute and BacktestFX offer manual replay with no automation at all.
FXAbsolute is the only one in this comparison requiring no account and no install — you open the site and start. Every other tool listed requires registration, and the desktop options additionally require installation and, in MetaTrader's case, a broker account.
Several are free: FXAbsolute with no account, the MT5 Strategy Tester with MetaTrader 5, BacktestFX with an account and ads, and FxBacktest. Among paid tools the cheapest long-run option is Soft4FX at $109 plus tax one-time, since subscription tools such as FX Replay and TradingSim exceed that within a year.
The browser-based ones: FXAbsolute, BacktestFX, FxBacktest, FX Replay, TradingView and TradingSim all run natively on macOS. Forex Tester, Soft4FX and the MT5 Strategy Tester are Windows software and need a virtual machine or compatibility layer, which on Apple Silicon adds both cost and a performance penalty.
FXAbsolute gives five years of real one-minute data across 15 instruments with no account and no install — check the table, then try it.
