Forex Backtesting Software Reviews (2026)

Published 2026-08-17 · Updated 2026-08-17 · FXAbsolute

Nine tools, one rubric, and every price read from the vendor's own page on 17 August 2026 rather than copied from another review. That last part matters more than it should: checking these figures against the source turned up errors in every third-party roundup consulted — wrong prices, wrong platform support, and free tiers described as far more generous than they are.

The rubric

Scoring anything out of ten invites the accusation that the numbers were reverse-engineered to reach a preferred conclusion. So here is the rubric first, applied identically to all nine, including our own tool — which does not win.

CriterionWeightWhat earns a high score
Data realism25%Tick data, real spreads, deep history, few gaps
Cost to start20%Genuinely usable without paying; no crippled trial
Time to first trade15%Minutes, not an install-and-licence afternoon
Manual replay15%Step bars by hand and place your own trades
Automation15%Coded strategies, parameter sweeps, forward testing
Accessibility10%Mac, Linux, phone; no virtual machine required

Two criteria pull hard against each other by design. Data realism rewards paid desktop software with tick feeds. Cost to start and time to first trade reward browser tools. No product scores well on both, and any roundup claiming one does is selling something.

9TradingSim$396–$449 / yearUS equities — not forex5.2
TradingSim's 5.2 is not a quality judgement. It is excellent software with historical Level 2 replay almost nothing else offers. It scores low on a forex rubric because it does not cover spot forex at all. For US equities it would rank near the top.

Where each one genuinely wins

1. Forex Tester 5 — 8.1

The highest score, because data realism carries the most weight and Forex Tester's Super Data tier delivers tick data with floating spread across 860 symbols. The catch is the one most reviews bury: software and data are separate purchases. Basic data is 18 symbols at medium quality; the tier you actually want costs roughly four times the software. Windows only.

2. FXAbsolute — 7.9

Our own tool, so treat the number sceptically and check the rubric. It scores maximum on cost to start, time to first trade and accessibility, strongly on manual replay, and zero on automation — there is no coded strategy testing at all. Data realism is mid-table: 28,412,683 one-minute bars across 15 instruments from 2021 to 2026 is deep, but it is mid-price OHLC with no spread modelling, which genuinely matters for scalping. The full self-review states the flaws first.

3. MT5 Strategy Tester — 7.6

Free, with real broker tick data and multi-core optimisation — a combination nothing else offers at zero cost. It scores zero on manual replay because it tests Expert Advisors only; you cannot place trades by hand. Requires MQL5. The modelling-mode trap is worth understanding before trusting a result.

4. Soft4FX — 7.4

$109 plus tax, one-time, covering MT4 and MT5 both. Blogs still say "$97" and "MT4 only"; both are wrong. It exists to add manual trading to the MetaTrader tester, which is precisely the gap MT5 leaves. Loses points for requiring MetaTrader, Windows and setup.

5. BacktestFX — 7.2

The competitor that beats us on an axis we cannot match: 9+ years of tick-level data with real market spreads, free. The cost is an account requirement and ads. If spread modelling matters to your strategy and you will not pay, this is the better choice — and saying otherwise would be dishonest.

6. FX Replay — 6.8

Genuinely polished, and the workflow is the nicest of the browser tools. The free tier is far tighter than reviews suggest: 2 sessions, 50 records per session, one week of data retention, one indicator. Intermediate is $17.99/month or $180/year; Pro is $35/month or $350/year and adds seconds data and futures.

7. TradingView Bar Replay — 6.4

The correction that matters: the free Basic plan has no intraday bar replay at all — daily and above only. Essential gives roughly six months of one-minute depth; Plus about a year of M1; Premium all stored data; Ultimate adds seven days of tick replay. If you already pay for TradingView, replay is a fine bonus. It is not a reason to subscribe.

8. FxBacktest — 5.9

Free, browser-based, functional. Thinner on data depth and features than the tools above, but a reasonable cross-check.

9. TradingSim — 5.2

Pro $79/month or $396/year; Premium $89/month or $449/year with five years of history, tick charts and Level 2. Covers US equities, futures and crypto. No spot forex.

Pick by what you actually do

The scores are a summary, not a recommendation. The rubric weights will not match your situation, so match yourself to a row instead:

That last row is the most common mistake in this category. Backtesting software is bought early, used briefly, and abandoned — not because it is bad, but because the buyer had not yet built the habit the software was meant to support. Every tool in the top half of this table has a free path to finding that out first.

Why the prices here differ from other roundups

Every figure above was read from the vendor's own pricing page on 17 August 2026 and dated. That sounds like a low bar. It turned out not to be.

Pricing moves, and this page will drift too. The date is stated so you can judge how stale it is, and every claim links to the vendor so you can check rather than trust. If you find one that has changed, the vendor's page wins over this one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best forex backtesting software in 2026?

On a weighted rubric, Forex Tester 5 scores highest at 8.1 for data realism and automation, followed by FXAbsolute at 7.9 for cost and speed of starting, and the MT5 Strategy Tester at 7.6 for free automated testing. The right answer depends on whether your method needs precision or repetition — paid tools win on precision, free tools win on repetition.

What is the best free forex backtesting software?

For manual discretionary practice, FXAbsolute — free with no account, 28,412,683 one-minute bars across 15 instruments from 2021 to 2026. For automated strategy testing, the MT5 Strategy Tester, which is free with MetaTrader 5 and supports real broker tick data. For free tick data with real spreads, BacktestFX, which requires an account and shows ads.

Is paid backtesting software worth it?

It is worth it when your strategy depends on tick-level accuracy or spread modelling, when you test coded rule-based systems, or when you trade symbols outside the majors. It is not worth it when you are building screen time on price action, where free tools give unlimited repetitions at no cost.

Which backtesting tools have real spread modelling?

Forex Tester with its Super Data tier, the MT5 Strategy Tester when using real broker tick data, and BacktestFX among the free options. TradingView replay, FX Replay and FXAbsolute work from mid-price OHLC data without spread modelling, which matters most for strategies targeting under ten pips.

Does TradingView free include bar replay?

Not for intraday. As of 17 August 2026 the free Basic plan offers replay on daily timeframes and above only. Intraday one-minute replay depth starts on paid tiers, with Essential providing roughly six months of one-minute history.

Can I backtest forex on a Mac or a phone?

Yes, with browser-based tools. FXAbsolute and FX Replay both run in a browser with no install, so they work on macOS, Linux, iOS and Android. Forex Tester, Soft4FX and MetaTrader are Windows desktop software and need a virtual machine or compatibility layer on a Mac.
