How Often Does the Market Actually Trend?

Take the day's net move and divide it by the day's range. A clean one-way day scores near 1; a day that ends where it started having covered the ground twice scores near 0. The median GBP/USD day scores 0.46 — under half its own range is converted into net movement.

The spread between instruments is narrow. Roughly a third of days trend cleanly, roughly a third chop, and the rest sit between — on every pair measured.

Why this decides which strategy is being tested

A trend-following rule earns its money on the 33.1% and pays it back on the 29.9%. A mean-reversion rule does the reverse. Neither is right in general, and a backtest that happens to cover a stretch unusually rich in one kind of day will report an edge that belongs to the period rather than the rule.

The practical use is as a sanity check on a result. If a trend strategy shows a high win rate over a sample, it is worth knowing whether that sample had more than its share of the third of days where trend rules work.
