Signal clock
A Daily filter and an M15 entry can coexist, but the Daily bar must be fully closed before the M15 decision. Record both feed timezones and candle-close conventions.

Timeframe follows the decision horizon
NOTE 01There is no universally best timeframe for forex backtesting. A valid choice must preserve the information used by the strategy, represent the intended holding period, and leave enough resolution to model entries, stops, targets, and costs. H1 may be convenient, but convenience is not evidence that an hourly bar is right for a scalper or a multi-day position rule.
Treat timeframe selection as a measurement decision. Write the signal horizon and execution horizon separately, compare adjacent bar sizes on the same dates, and reject any aggregation that changes signal timestamps or hides important intrabar paths. The top five checks are clock alignment, quote resolution, cost-to-range, opportunity count, and stability on an untouched period.
A Daily filter and an M15 entry can coexist, but the Daily bar must be fully closed before the M15 decision. Record both feed timezones and candle-close conventions.
If a single bar can touch entry, stop, and target, OHLC does not reveal the order. Use finer data or a declared conservative collision rule.
More low-timeframe candles do not guarantee more independent trades. Clustered entries from one session or regime share information.
The best backtesting timeframe is the coarsest bar that preserves every decision-critical event.

Yes — always backtest on the exact timeframe you will trade live. Do not backtest on H1 and then trade M5 live — the pattern recognition and decision rhythms are completely different. Backtesting builds muscle memory for the specific timeframe you practise on.
